ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Zoology department is one among the pioneer departments in Payyanur College. It started functioning in 1969 to provide undergraduate course in Zoology. Most renowned Professor John C. Jacob was the first head of this prestigious department. Since its installation the department has played pivotal role in guiding and shaping the career of multitude of students. This department stood high in academic, extension and extracurricular activities. Right from the year 1972 a registered NGO videlicet Zoological Club started to function in the college under the leadership of Prof. John C Jacob. This organisation was instrumental in initiating fervent environmental movements with participation from students and public alike. The legendary Silent Valley agitation which gained global attention to Kerala state has been initiated by this Zoological club. The organising of the first ever Science Exhibition in North Malabar in 1974 was another prominent move. In 1982, to widen the activity of the club, an autonomous body named Society for Environmental Education in Kerala (SEEK). The activities enkindled by the laureate John C Jacob have been sustained and enhanced by all his successors Prof. T. P. Sreedharan, Prof. Janakikutty K.P, Prof. P.T. Nirmala, Prof. M. Jayarajan, Prof. M.Rajan and Prof. K.P. Aravindakshan advertently.
