PROGRAMMES ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

2022-23

Department of History Payyanur College Payyanur Organised Study tour on 20.08.2022
The main intention of the tour was to create an awareness among the students on the history of Malabar particularly on Kannur. As a part of it students visited Arrackal Museum, the only existing legacy of the Arrackal Dynasty in Kerala and also Visited St.Angelo’s Fort of Kannur. It reveals the Portuguese constructive style and British occupation of the Fort. Canons inside the fort and it’s landscape reveals the strategic importance of the fort as a military centre and as a trade hub.
Chirakkal Folklore Academy provided a new experience to the students through the exhibition of theyyam, bronze sculpture , folk art etc. Thus the study tour helped to create historical and cultural consciousness among the students and it reminds us the necessity of the Preservation of our Cultural Heritage for Future Generation.

As a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Department of History Payyanur college Payyanur organised an exhibition on 12.08.2022 at G.W.L.P. School Pilicode Vayal. This Exhibition was intended to promote and preserve our cultural heritage and to create consciousness among the students about our past. The exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. Bhajith, ward member Pilicode Grama Panchayath. It became a new Experience to the Students of G.W.L.P school and Government UP School Pilicode. Freedom fighter’s photo gallery , domestic and agricultural implements, stamp and coin collections , puppet models depicting the dressing style of various states of India and cartoons of the famous cartoonists Shankar, Ahmed and Vikram Varma about freedom struggle and photos that depict the life of Gandhiji were the highlights of this exhibition. This was organised by the Department in association with Government Welfare Lower Primary school Pilicode Vayal as a part of the program, Preservation of Cultural Heritage (PoCH) .

2016-17

Felicitation to Rank Holder and Toppers

A felicitation function was organized to congratulate the previous year First Rank Holder Manjush.P and other three students who secured higher grades on 22/07/2016. Dr. K.T.Ravindran, Principal Payyanur College addressed the gathering.

Invited Talk: Going Beyond Tradition

As a part of monthly talk series the department conducted a talk on Going beyond Tradition at seminar hall on 02/08/2017, which laid stress on inculcating values among students. The talk was delivered by Radhakrishnan C, Life Skill trainer and Principal, M H English School, Edappal Malapuram.

Invited Talk: Recent Trends in Kerala Historiography

On 15th March 2017 an invited talk was organized by the department. Dr.M.T.Narayanan, Associate Professor, Department of History, Sankaracharya University, Regional Centre, Payyanur delivered a speech on Recent Trends in Kerala Historiography.

Invited Talk: Myth and Society

On 8th March 2017, Monthly talk Series of History Department was inaugurated by Dr.Rajesh Komath, Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences, Mahathma Gandhi University, Kottayam and delivered a speech on the topic Myth and Society.

Association Inauguration and invited talk

History Association was inaugurated by Dr.C.Balan, Director (Retd.), Department of History and Heritage studies, Kannur University on 08.03.2017. He also made a talk on History Embedded in Folk Literature.

2015-16

Association Inauguration and invited lecture

History association was inaugurated by Dr. M T Narayanan Associate Professor, Department of History, Sri Sankaracharya University, Regional Centre Payyanur on 12/02/2016. He also made a talk on Brahmin Migration and social changes of medieval Kerala

International Archives Day Celebration: Exhibition and One Day Seminar

As part of international Archives day Celebration Department Organized an exhibition of Archival and Archaeological materials from 23/01/2016 to 25/01/2016. In connection with the celebration one day national seminar was also organized on History and Heritage from January 24th 2016. The Programme was organized in collaboration with Malayalam Department, Payyanur College and State Archives Department. The celebration was inaugurated by Sri. K. C. Joseph, Hon. Minister for planning, Culture and Rural Development. The Seminar was Inaugurated by Dr. Balachandran Keezhoth, Registrar,Kannur University . The programme throws light on the importance of archives and turned to be a great success with the participation of students and the public.

Invited Talk: Post Modern Historiography

An invited talk was organized by the Department on the topic on 15/01/2016 at seminar hall. Dr. Dinesan V, Assistant Professor, Govt.Brennen College Thalassery lead the session and shared his views on post modern approaches in history. After the talk an interaction session was arranged for the student to clear their doubts on project work.

National Seminar: Images and Representation: Art in History

On 9th November 2015, one day national seminar, Images and Representation: Art in History was organised. Dr. Jayaram Poduval, HoD, Art History and Aesthetics, University of Baroda inaugurated the programme. The Seminar brought together experts on Medieval and Modern art History in India. Several valuable presentations were made in the seminar which helped the students to acquire knowledge about the images and representations in history.

Gandhi Quiz 2015

In connection with the Gandhi Jayanthi celebration An Inter Departmental Quiz Competition was conducted by department on 1st October 2015.Participation of teams from all the 13 Departments made the programme a great success It created a competitive spirit among the students and it also helped them to gather more information about Gandhiji and Indian National Movement.

2014-15

Associate Professor and former HoD of the Department of History, Payyanur College inaugurated the history association and addressed the gathering and also delivered a speech on the topic Role of Students In the Process of Social Formation.

Dr. C Balan, Director (Retd), Department of History and Heritage Studies, Kannur University was invited by the Department of History to deliver a speech on New Trends in Writing Local History on 01/08/2014. He spoke about how myths lore is related with the origin place names of a particular locality.

Invited Talk: Cultural Heritage of North Malabar

Prof. C Haridas, Director of Culture and Heritage Studies was entrusted with the task of inaugurating the function and address the gathering on 18th July 2014. He delivered a lecture on the topic Cultural Heritage of North Malabar. He spoke about how language and rituals of a society represent a culture. The talk helped to inculcate a spirit of enquiry to the minds of students to find out the cultural history of the locality in which they came. There were many distinguished personalities who attended the function and interaction session was a grand success.

An invited talk on Research Methodology was organized on 13/06/2014 at seminar hall to give a proper guidance to the students of the department on research and related activities. Joy Balan, Assistant Professor University College, Trivandrum addressed the gathering. After the talk an interaction session was arranged for the students.

2013-14

Association inauguration and invited lecture

History association was inaugurated by Sri. Majeed. U, Associate Professor, Department of History, P S M O College, Thirurangadi on14/02/2014. After the inaugural session a one day seminar was conducted and chief guest spoke about the Oral Tradition and Writing Local History.

Photo Exhibition: Nehru the Architect of Modern India

To rewind the memories of Jawaharlal Nehru, Department of History organized a Photo Exhibition titled as Nehru – the Architect of Modern India on 24th January 2014. The programme exhibit rare photos of Nehru. Students from different department visited the Gallery and comment that to them it was a great experience.

100 Years of Gaddar Revolution: Photo Exhibition

100 years of Gaddar Revolution was celebrated Department of History on 13th August 2013. On that day department conducted a Photo Exhibition relating to Gaddar Revolution. The exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. M P Jayarajan, Principal, Payyanur College, Payyanur. The programme gave a clear idea regarding the historical importance of Gaddar Revolution.

Seminar: Archives for All

A seminar on Archives for all was conducted by the Department on July 12th 2013. The seminar was inaugurated by Eswaran P, Course coordinator-cum Lecturer, Centre for Heritage Studies, Hill Palace, Tripunithura, Ernakulam and was enriched with a presentation on the topic Needs and Importance of Archives in the Present World.

Association inauguration and invited talk

A. Parameswaran, Associate Professor, Department of History, CAS College, Madayi, the chief guest of the inaugural session of History Association address the gathering by focusing on the topic Annales School of Historical Thought on 05/03/2013.

Photo exhibition: A Peep in to Malabar

Department of history, Payyanur college, Payyanur conducted a photo exhibition titled A Peep in to Malabar on 11th and 12th of October 2012. The exhibition was inaugurated by sri. Thejraj Mallar, acting president of Payyanur education society. The exhibition throws light on the historical and antique importance of Malabar. The exhibition was enriched with wonderful photos which show the antique culture and importance of Malabar
