Payyanur College, Payyanur, commenced its distinguished journey as a junior college affiliated with Kerala University on July 15, 1965. In 1969, it achieved the status of a fully-fledged degree college. The Department of Economics has been operational since 1969, with the inaugural head being the then-Principal of Payyanur College, Professor P.K. Surendranath. Professor Surendranath was a prominent economist in Kerala at the time, known for his extensive knowledge and dedication. His enthusiasm, dedication, and boundless energy inspired the other members of the Department, motivating them toward collective efforts for its advancement.

Following Professor Surendranath, the Department was headed by Professor V. Indira for nearly three decades. The faculty during this period included Professor K. Rajagopalan, Professor K. Kassim, Professor T.K. Vishnu Namboodiri, Ms Suchitra Surendranath, Mr R. Sathianathan, and Mr K.T.V. Divakaran. Thereafter, the Department of Economics was headed by Mr. R. Sathianathan, Associate Professor (2003-2010), and Mr. K.T.V. Divakaran Associate Professor (2010 -2013). Since 2013, Ms Binila Mathews, Associate Professor was heading the department till 2022-23. Dr Sunitha B Nair assumed the role of Head of the Department during the last academic year, 2023-24 for a period of three years.

The Department of Economics at Payyanur College has always been at the forefront of academic excellence, consistently securing university ranks and producing distinguished alumni over its five-and-a-half-decade history. Thousands of graduates have achieved prominent positions worldwide, reflecting the department’s commitment to academic and professional success.

A preferred destination for students, especially from weaker sections of the Malabar area, the department has played a vital role in their social upliftment.
