HINDI DEPARTMENT

The Department of Hindi has been an integral part of Payyanur College since its inception in 1965. The BA Hindi programme was introduced in 1976, initially affiliated to Kerala University and subsequently with Calicut University. Later, it got affiliated to Kannur University. In 1998, the another undergraduate programme, BA Functional Hindi was introduced in the department.
Recognized as a research centre in 2006, the department has successfully produced 18 PhD scholars, and hosted several research activities as well, till date. As a research department offering two undergraduate programmes, it continues to act as a link between Payyanur’s rich tradition of national freedom struggle and Hindi language.
The department consistently excels, by achieving top pass percentages and ranks in the undergraduate programme at the university level. This success is attributed to the combined effort of dedicated faculty members and students. Hindi department comprises of seven permanent faculty members and one guest faculty. Two faculty members currently supervise research studies. A thriving research environment is fostered through regular seminars and workshops on research methodology.

Students actively participate in inter-collegiate and university-level academic competitions, thereby garnering numerous accolades. Beyond academics, the department actively engages with the social community by offering Hindi language courses to the public and government officials. A prominent programme focused on Communicative Hindi Training for Police Officials undertaken, aims to enhance communication between Hindi-speaking regions and Malayali Police personnel. Hindi language basics to fourth standard students too is introduced in the nearby Lower Primary School. The department also conducts annual Spoken Hindi Certificate Courses.

Notably, the department boasts of a strong alumni network with distinguished members contributing significantly to various fields, including teaching and research. The department’s well-equipped research library supports scholarly endeavours. It realizes Hindi as the major connecting language of Indian common people. Recognizing the linguistic diversity of India and the unifying role of Hindi, the department adopts a pan-Indian perspective in its language and literature studies.
