Department of Commerce is of late origin in Payyanur College. It was the last department constituted in the year 1982, with one Pre Degree batch under Calicut University. After long years of waiting B.Com course was sanctioned in 1995 and the classes were started on 14.10.1996. It is one of the prestigious Commerce departments in Kannur University. Due to the increasing demand for commerce subject, government sanctioned BBA course and we had commenced the course in July 2014.
Since the commerce education is a professional one, it needs to be made job-oriented. The students opting for commerce have a bright future and a lot of opportunities are available in the changing global market. The corporate world is dynamic and the changes are so severe that a series of new concepts and techniques are fast coming into being and the earlier and traditional ones are becoming obsolete. Though the syllabi are restructured with this end in view, simply theoretical aspects are not enough. They should be given practical awareness. Majority of the students of this department comes from rural areas; they have some inhibitions compared to those students who are from town areas. So they have to be given opportunities to develop themselves by attending seminars, workshops, training programmes, participating in various competitions, sharing experiences of successful personalities, organising events, etc. which will enhance their employability. Faculties also attend various seminars, workshops and present papers in seminars; serve as resource persons for various programmes etc. with the aim of themselves and to serve the students and the community at large. This will also increase the reputation of the institution and in particular the department. It is under this background; all the staffs in this department collectively discuss and chalk out plans to implement the activities of the department.
Under the auspices of the department, an Entrepreneurial Development Club is functioning well, which gives practical business experience to students by putting up refreshment stalls, arranges interactions with successful entrepreneurs to share their experiences and organizes industrial visits to gain practical exposure.
A Regular tutorial programme which is very helpful to remove the inhibitions of the students and to equip them to participate in various competitions, is organized by the students under the guidance of the faculties. Personal counseling is also given to students who need it.
Students are encouraged to compete in the Management Meets, Business Quiz programmes, Project presentation programmes etc. conducted by other colleges, and Universities. They are also given opportunity to participate in seminars/ workshops organized by other institutions.
Students organize Management Meets and Business Quiz programmes for the Plus Two level as well as Degree level students of various schools/colleges to develop organizational and leadership qualities.
Though a late comer in the field, we have strong alumni with Business men, Chartered Accountants, Executives, lecturers, Officers and so on. Book Bank Scheme in the department under which books are given to students who are financially poor but academically rich is only one among the different programmes sponsored by the alumni.
