Department Activities

The book named ‘A Beginner’s Field Guide To Moths of Malabar’ authored by Mr. M P Unnikrishnan, a student of Zoology department was released by the Hon. Vice Chancellor of Kannur University, Prof. Gopinath Ravindran in a function held at 11 am on 1st February 2023 at the seminar Hall. The Vice Chancellor pointed out the uniqueness about the book by a student and congratulated the Department for offering support. He urged other departments to take such initiatives.The book was published by the Department of Zoology and Zoology Old Students’ Association (ZOSAPC), as part of RADS (Research Aptitude Development Programme).

The book is the first one of its kind being the firt field guide from Kerala on moths and the first scientific book published by a student from Payyanur College. the book has a pictorial description of more than 400 species of moths directly observed, photographed by his mobile camera, and described scientifically. The observations were done largely during the covid time.  

The book was recieved from the Vice Chancellor by Mr. John Joseph Thayyil, Secretary, Payyanur Educational Society  and the function was presided over by Dr Santhosh V M, Principal. Dr. KK Sreekumar, Alumnus of the department and   Senior Entomologist, RAPP, Indonesia, introduced the book, T P Padmanabhan, Director, SEEK, Dr P R Swaran, IQAC Coordinator, Athul Raj, College Union Chairman and Mr P V Prabhakaran, ZOSAPC Executive Member facilitated on the function. Mr.  Unnikrishnan explained his experience with moths that culminated in the publication of the book. Dr. sapna Jacob welcomed the gathering and Mr. M Ramith, Secretary, ZOSAPC proposed vote of thanks. More than 140 audience that include students, staff and alumni attended the programme. The programme came to an end by 1.30pm.

Zoomazing – Zoology exhibition and health check up

An exhibition and health check up camp was organised by Dept of Zoology, on 13-01-2023.
The exhibition showcases the projector used by Environmentalist and the former HOD of Zoology Sri John C Jacob to popularise environmentalism among the public along with various other specimens preserved in the department. Specimens of Jaw Bone of Whale, coral reef, jellyfish, flying fish, skulls and skeletons of animals, embryos showing developmental stages are included in this exhibition. To add on to the visual attractions, some interesting videos were also screened. A free health check up camp was also there as part of the exhibition, where B.M.I., BP, eye vision, and blood group etc were checked up. The exhibition was inaugurated by the principal of Payyanur College Dr.V. M. Santhosh, and HoD, Dr Sapna Jacob, IQAC co ordinator and faculty of the department of Zoology Dr. P.R. Swaran, Praveen Kumar M.K. and Dr. Shilpa O., spoke on the occasion. The exhibition lasted till evening and around 500 students and staff visited the exhibition.

TEACHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Teachers’ day was celebrated by Zoology Dept. in association with IQAC on 5th September 2022, 7 pm to 8.30 pm. Guest speaker of the programme was Dr Anilkumar Gopinathan, Senior Professor, VIT, Vellur. He spoke on the topic ‘Being a Teacher’ by explaining different roles and importance of the teaching profession. Dr Sapna Jacob, HoD, welcomed the gathering, Principal Dr VM Santhosh presided, Dr PR Swaran, IQAC Coordinator felicitated and Sreelakshmi VP, Ill BSc Zoology, expressed vote of thanks. Dr. E Harikrishnan, HoD Botany, jithina and Sreelakshmi participated in discussions. A total of 68 students and faculty attended the programme.

Zoology association was inaugurated by Mr Mavesh, Chairman, Maheendra Wild Life Foundation. He gave a presentation on snakes (Snakes- Myths and Facts).

Final year students of the Department participated in three day nature camp held at Tholpetty wynad wild life sanctuary sponsored by the Forest Department Government of Kerala.

A function was organized in the department to congratulate the toppers in BSc Zoology examination. Ms. Akhila B Nair (1st Rank holder in University), Ms. Suranya K (2nd rank holder in University) were presented with Memento and Cash Award during the function.

A seminar on environmental conservation sponsored by SEEK was organized by the department. Sri T P Padmanabhan, Director SEEK, inaugurated and presented the topic.

A new endowment of Rs.1 Lakh instituted by Dr. Sateesh C. Raghavan, (Bhatnagar Award Winner, Scientist at IISC, Bangalore and a former student) in memory of his father Mr C,N, Raghavan was handed over to the HOD, Prof. K.P. Aravindakshan in a function organized in the department. The best student of the department will be given the endowment from next BSC result onwards. Classmates of Dr Sateesh Raghavan also participated in the function.

Two days camp was organized in the Department. Various social skill development programmmes were the highlight of the camp, which was organized by a well known NGO, Padavu, Pilathara. Interactions with the retired teachers (Prf. T.P. Sreedharan, Prof. Jayarajan, Prof. M. Rajan and Prof. Janakikkutty K.P), documentary show on mangroves, visit to mangroves near Perumba river, boat journey, visit to areas of environmental destruction in and around the campus was also done on the second day.

Conducted an Environmental Quiz, jointly with Chemistry Department. 12 teams participated and Mr. Jineesh, RTO Officer, Thalipparamba was the Quiz master.

A seminar on Western Ghat diversity was conducted as part of World Environmental Day Celebrations with financial support from KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala. Profe. E Kunhikrishnan inauguarated the seminar and made a presentation on the theme. Pro. T.P. Sreedharan also made a presentation on Western Ghat animal diversity.

The Department set up a stall in the All India exhibition at cheruvathur. About 100 selected specimens and bones were displayed.

The museum and lab were renovated as part of the golden jubilee exhibition. The department also set up stalls like health check up (BP, Blood group, BMI), bird nests, snakes etc which were well appreciated by the viewers.

Meeting of Zoological club and welcome party for freshers. Cash award and momento presented by Prof M Rajan, Former HOD to Ms Saranya Sasidharan who secured first rank in BSc Zoology Examination of Kannur University and Ms. Induja D K, III Sem student for securing the Balamony Endowement award for best zoology student in Kannur University. Two students of V Sem (Thasreefa K and Akhila B Nair), who successfully completed summer research project of JNCASR, Bangalore were also congratulated.

World Environment day was celebrated by planting 100 native mango saplings in the campus. The programme was inaugurated by Sri Rajan, noted environmentalist, who also helped to rear out the seedlings.
