Payyanur College, Payyanur, affiliated to Kannur University and accredited by NAAC at 'A' level, is one of the very few sought-after institutions of higher education in North Kerala. The college was established in 1965, as a result of the committed efforts of the visionaries who steered the Payyanur Educational Society, a charitable society that runs the college and two schools. In the beginning, the college was allowed to provide instruction to about 960 students of Science and Humanities at the Pre-Degree level. The college became a full-fledged degree college in 1969. The second considerable upgradation of the college occurred in the year 1984 with the commencement of post graduation in Mathematics. At present, the college offers post graduate courses in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics and undergraduate courses in 13 disciplines across Science, Humanities and Commerce streams. Also, the departments of Mathematics, Physics, and Hindi are the recognized research centres of Kannur University. The college provides higher education to over 1500 students now.
Drawing its students from among all the communities of the sprawling Kannur and Kasaragod districts and catering to the secular, democratic, and academic interests of the society, Payyanur College stands out as a beacon of knowledge with its sprawling campus. It is an eloquent testimony to the dream and vision of some prominent persons. The soul to be remembered first is the late Vyaghram S. Sivaramakrishna Iyer who contributed a significant amount besides the valuable moral support for the academic venture. The next name of relevance is late Adv. K.S. Umamaheswara Iyer, the first President of the Payyanur Educational Society which was constituted in 1963. Others to be recollected with gratitude are the former presidents of the society late K.G. Maller and late A.C. Sukumaran Nambiar. The present board is headed by Sri. K. Ramachandran, a former student of this college.
The college is well equipped with the required academic and infrastructural potentialities to meet the challenges of the time. More developmental activities are on the anvil and the college is preparing itself for the re-accreditation process by the NAAC.
The Women's Hostel is constructed with the financial assistance from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. Of the total cost of Rs.1.50 crores, the UGC's share is Rs.99 lakhs and the rest is contributed by the management.
On behalf of the management, the staff, the students and all other well wishers of the college, we whole-heartedly invite you to the inaugural ceremony to make the event a grand and memorable one.
With Warm Regards
