INAUGURATION OF RESEARCH CENTRE

Kannur University Vice Chancellor Professor Bijoy S Nandan inaugurated the newly allocated research centre at the Department of English on 01.03.2024. He opined that Payyanur College has the first place among the more than 100 colleges under the University. He fondly reminded the audience that the environmental movement was started under the leadership of Professor John C. Jacobs. He added that both teachers and students need to be knowledge producers. All academic departments should become research centres to empower the students. He added that the new education policies also emphasise the same. College Principal Professor Santhosh V.M. presided over the function. Payyanur Educational Society Management President Shri K. Master Ramachandran was the chief guest. PTA Secretary Dr. Subha PV, Vice President M. Sanjivan, I.Q.A.C. Coordinator Dr. P. R. Swaran and Union General Secretary Amal Prem spoke on the occasion. Dr. A.C. Sreehari, HoD, Department of English welcomed the gathering and Head of Chemistry Department Shruti K.P extended vote of thanks.

LITWIT 2024

On the 26th of February 2024, the P G Department of English & Research Center at Payyanur College hosted an intercollegiate literary festival titled ‘LIT WIT’. The event commenced with two sessions, inaugurated by Dr. Santhosh V M, the Principal of Payyanur College, at 10:15 AM. Registration for the literary games was available both online and offline, garnering a significant response of nearly 70 participants through online registration alone.

The morning session featured five engaging literary games: Spell Bee, One Minute Reading, Literary Quiz, Find the Author, and Poetry Writing. Among these, One Minute Reading attracted the highest number of participants, with 30 individuals, closely followed by Poetry Writing with 23 entries. Additionally, the Literary Quiz comprised 12 teams, Find the Author had 14 participants, and Spell Bee saw 12 enthusiastic contenders. Notably, a considerable portion of participants hailed from other colleges. The session commenced at 10:30 AM and concluded at 12:30 PM.

The afternoon session took place in the Seminar hall, offering entertaining games and cultural programs presented by students from Payyanur College. The prize distribution ceremony for the morning session also took place during this segment of the event. Commencing at 1:30 PM, the program continued until 4:00 PM. Overall, LIT WIT proved to be a resounding success, attracting active participation from colleges across the district. It served as a vibrant platform where words illuminated minds and creativity flourished.

Just a Minute

The “Just a Minute” program, which featured the One Minute Reading competition, saw remarkable success with a large number of participants from diverse colleges. In this event, contestants were tasked with reading a provided paragraph within a strict one-minute time limit. The competition comprised two rounds held from 11:15 AM to 1:00 PM. Certificates were awarded to the first and second-place winners in recognition of their achievements.

Find the Author

As part of the intercollegiate literary festival hosted by the English department, ‘LIT WIT’, the ‘Find the Author’ competition was organized. Commencing at 11:15 AM and concluding at 12:30 PM, the program featured three rounds of competition. Participants competed in groups of two, with approximately 15 groups in total. Remarkably, the victorious team hailed from Payyannur College. Notably, there was significant participation from students representing other colleges as well.

Spell Bee

 The Spell Bee competition, a part of LITWIT, was coordinated by teachers Jinasree and Suhana, along with student coordinators Deepna, Anusree, Swetha, Akshara, Vyshnavi, and Amal. This event attracted numerous participants from various colleges and consisted of three rounds. The words used in the competition were all derived from English literature. Held from 10:30 to 11:15 AM, the participants were given a specific time limit to spell each word. Certificates were awarded to the winners. The Spell Bee proved to be both informative and successful.

Battle of the Intellects

A standout feature of Litwit was the quiz, dubbed ‘The Battle of Intellects’. Drawing participants from multiple colleges, this quiz centered on English Literature and presented questions via screen display. Running from 10:15 AM to 11:30 AM, the quiz comprised twenty questions, with participants allotted thirty seconds per question. Winners received certificates and cash prizes. The quiz was highly interactive, informative, and garnered significant success.

Poetry Writing

As part of the Lit Wit competition, 23 entries were submitted for the poetry writing segment. Participants were assigned the topic ‘Deadbody’ to inspire their compositions. Winners received certificates in acknowledgment of their achievements.

 Photography

As part of the intercollegiate fest, a photography competition exclusively for Payyanur College students was conducted. Participants were tasked with capturing images related to the topic ‘life’. The event was judged by Sreejith, a faculty member from the Physics department.

Drawing 

As a component of the intercollegiate fest, Payyanur College hosted a drawing competition exclusively for its students. Participants were tasked with creating artwork related to the theme ‘War and Children’. The event was evaluated by A.C. Sreehari. 

INAUGURATION OF “MOVIE MANIACS”- FILM CLUB, PAYYANUR COLLEGE-20.12.2023

Inauguration of the activities of “Movie Maniacs,” the film club of Payyanur College for the year 2023-2024 was done by the very popular Cinematographer and winner of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy Award, Sri. K.U. Mohanan on 20.12.2023 at 11 am. Dr. A.C. Sreehari, HoD, Department of English welcomed the welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest. A graduate in cinematography from the Pune Film Institute and a doyen in his field, 

Sri. K. U. Mohanan inaugurated the club by revealing the logo and thereby extending a comprehensive lecture on films.

Webinar on Research Methodology: Trajectories of Becoming a Researcher

Post Graduate Department of English, Payyanur College conducted a Webinar on Research Methodology in association with IQAC and Research Committee on 31/05/2023.The resource person Mr.Anand R, Research Scholor, Department of Studies in English, Dr. Janaki Ammal Campus, Palayad, delivered the lecture on the topic “Research Methodology: Trajectories of Becoming a Researcher”.

He started the session by defining the term research and dealt with the topics of how to find a research area, ways of narrowing topic idea, framing of research questions, preparing for Research Proposal and Plagiarism.
He concluded the session by mentioning the PhD courses available in some Indian Universities. Later he answered the queries of audience.The event was hosted by Amritha Vydoori S P, Assistant Professor, Department of English and the welcome address was delivered by Shaza Shaniya of MA English. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Sania of MA English. The event turned quite fruitful with the active participation of both students and teachers.

Talk on Film Sound Designing

The PG Department of English, Payyanur College, Payyanur, organized a talk on  Film Sound Designing by Mr. Renganaath Ravee, Kerala State Film Award winner on 23rd February 2023 @ G 14 from 11.00 am.
 
Mr. Renganaath started the session by stating that impact in cinema reaches us through the sound. Even though cinema is a visual medium, sound is responsible for the impact on the audience. He mentioned the evolution of different forms of sound that are used in cinema. According to him, the sound designer is the director of the audio.
Adithyan M.T. of final year BA English was honoured in the programme for winning fourth position in the State Level Election Short Film contest and the short film was screened too.

The programme commenced with a welcome speech  by Dr A.C Sreehari, senior faculty of the Department.  Dr. Aiswarya P.K. introduced the resource person. All the faculty and students of the department and Dr Santhosh V.M.,the Principal were part of the programme.

The session was indeed a huge success,  really entertaining and informative .

Workshop on Research Methodology by PG Department of English, Payyanur College, Payyanur.

The PG Department of English, Payyanur College, Payyanur, organised a workshop on Research Methodology on 19th January 2023. Ms. C Labeeba, Research Scholar in Kannur University was the Resource Person. Dr Aiswarya PK, Faculty, Payyanur College introduced the speaker and welcomed the gathering.
The audience responded actively with comments and queries. Devapriya EV and Chithralekha of 3rd DC English along with Ashley David of PG department of English shared their doubts. Having commenced at 10.a.m, the lecture spanned over an hour and ended with Revathi of 2nd PG proposing the vote of thanks. Dr V M Santhosh, Principal, Payyanur and Mani K P, faculty of English Department were also present.The session was indeed inspiring and a huge success.

Vantage Lecture on” Matching up to the Machines: Cognification, AI and the Future of Human Creativity”

As a part of the Vantage Lecture Series organised by the PG Department of English, Payyanur College , Sreetilak Sambhanda, the Executive Vice President, Viva Books and Viva Education, Delhi and an alumnus of the department delivered a lecture on ” Matching up to the Machines: Cognification, AI and the Future of Human Creativity” on 5 th January 2023 at the College Seminar Hall. Mr. Sreetilak spoke about the every day applications of AI with interesting examples and prompted the audience to analyse the opportunities and challenges AI offers to creative arts. Dr. A C Sreehari, Assistant Professor, welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest to the audience. Meghna of final year BA English extended the vote of thanks. All the faculties and the students of the department attended the programme.

Realise your Mind’s Strength”: A Different Take on Drug Abuse

The PG Department of English, Payyanur College conducted a unique Anti Drug Abuse program ” Realise Your Mind’s Strength” on the 16 th of December 2022 at the Park in the college at 2.00pm. Sarang P P. of final year BA English, who is also a mentalist, demonstrated how human mind can be controlled through his mentalist experiments for which two volunteers from the audience assisted him. Through his experiments Sarang proved that it is not impossible to completely control human mind. Therefore, it is always possible to stay away from drugs and to come out of its influence even if one falls prey to it. He asked all those present to spread the message and help those who struggle with the issue. Dr Premachandran Keezhoth, HOD, Department of English, presided over the function. Dr Sindhu Thamban, Assistant Professor, Department of English welcomed the gathering. Dr.V.M. Santhosh, the Principal and Mani K P, Assistant Professor, Department of English felicitated the function. All the teachers and students of the department attended the programme. Suhana P A, Assistant Professor, Department of English delivered the vote of thanks.

SEMINAR ON GENDER, SEXUALITY AND QUEER POLITICS

The Post Graduate Department of English, Payyanur College, Payyanur organized a one day seminar on the topic “Gender, Sexuality and Queer Politics”, in connection with the Vantage lecture series, on 02/12/2022. The seminar focused on addressing and analyzing the LGBTQI+ community from the perspectives of an insider and outsider. The resource persons were Esha Kishore, an indigenous transgender activist from Kanhangad and Shilpa Parthan, research scholar at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
The keynote address was given by Ms. Esha Kishore, the first transgender news reader of Kerala.
The programme wasmoderated by Dr AC Sreehari and the introductory speech was made by Mr. Mani K P, both being faculties of the department. Aparna M.P., English Association Secretary, gave a feed back to the sessions and Aswathy of First year M.A. English proposed vote of thanks.

The PG Department of English, Payyanur College, Payyanur, arranged a class by Ms Aiswarya Sureshan, Research Scholar, NIT Warangal and an alumna of the Department to celebrate the Teachers’ Day. She handled a session for the students of the Department ( both PG and UG) on the topic “From Anthropocentrism to Ecocentrism : Evolution of Eco Centric World in the Context of Covid 19”.

The session started at 7:30 pm with a welcome speech by Devadathan EV, 3rd DC English student. Nandana Prakash, 3rd DC English student, introduced the resource person.
A pertinent and engaging interactive session followed the lecture. Questions and doubts were raised by Keerthana, Devadathan EV, Devadathan TM, Shivani and Nandana. Ms Meghana from 3rd DC English proposed the vote of thanks.

Over 90 members including the faculty members and students of the department attended the programme.

Technical support was given by Sarang PP and Adithyan MT. Devapriya EV compered the programme.

The whole session was handled by the 3rd DC students of the department.

By arranging a class by an alumna on this Teachers’ Day and by entrusting the students to organise the technical session, the students and former students were given the opportunity for taking the lead role in the teaching-learning process. Such a role reversal would definitely boost the morale of the students and this is what a teacher wants too.

First lecture of the “Vantage: Critical Idiom Lecture Series” for this academic year, organised by the PG Department of English, Payyanur College was conducted on 03/08/2022. Sivashankar Rajmohan A.K., former UGC Senior Research Fellow at Kannur University Dr.Janakiammal Campus delivered the lecture on the topic “Literary Theory and Academic Research: Engaging with the Basics. Devapriya E V of third year BA English welcomed the gathering. Dr Aiswarya P K, Assistant Professor, Department of English introduced the resource person. Around 110 people attended the program. The resource person opened up new arenas of theoretical insights for the students. The session was quite engaging. After the two-hour lecture there was an interactive session in which the students raised their queries. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Raniyah K. of second year BA English

Dr K. Satchidanandan, eminent poet, translator and academician, delivers a speech on Indian Literature: Diversity in Unity (ഇന്ത്യൻ സാഹിത്യം: ഒരുമയിലെ പലമ). The venue also witnessed the launch of the blog English Made Easy by Sri Satchidanandan. The blog was designed by the students of BA English language and Literature 2015-18 batch, Payyanur College, as a guide to the book Green Voices, English Common Course text prescribed for the second semester undergraduate students of Kannur University.

Dr Vipin Kumar, former students and presently Asso. Prof at EFLU, Lucknow campus, interacted with the students of English on how translation is not a secondary activity and how untranslatability needs to be understood as moments of creativity. In the afternoon, Dr Jyothi Arayambath spoke to the students on Mental Health.
